We're OK part 3

We found out that we were out of school/work for a few more days, at least. I'm kind of grateful for the break. I think I was getting kind of stressed out and worn out from work. I love my job, but sometimes the stress of politics can get to you.

We slept a little better with the cooler weather. We are still sleeping in the living room with the window open. It's been interesting watching the world go by from our porch. And the bulk of the entertainment has still come from the kids. I also picked up my crocheting project that I left sometime ago. I forgot what stitches I used and I had to re-aquaint myself with the project again.

I was able to get Samy to the vet today. He did indeed have an upper respiratory infection, so the doctor gave him some pills to take, an antibiotic. We have to give a cat a pill??? Are you crazy??? But he showed us how to do it. Actually, he showed Corinne how to do it. It looked easy enough, until we had to do it at home. I'm glad Corinne was doing that. I couldn't do it.

Speaking of giving Samy medicine, he got so bad last night he was at the point where he couldn't breathe because he was so stopped up. I finally broke down and pulled out some Robitussin and gave him a few drops. I confessed to the vet the next day what I did, and he said I did good. But he warned me to NEVER give a cat any n-saids (Tylenold, Advil) because that could be deadly. So, if you have a cat that is stopped up and you can't take them to the vet until the next day, give him some Robitussin.

Today was the first time we ventured out. Since people were having a hard time finding gas, I figured I would only drive unless we have to go out for something. After we took Samy to the vet, we headed home and saw our cable company restoring cable in my neighborhood. How backwards is that? We don't have power, but we now have cable???? Tease me, why don't you? I have cable, but I can't see it. The only thing I can justify this is that some people have bundled services, like internet, cable and phone together. They can at least make a phone call.

After we dropped off Samy, we went to the store. As we walked around, we noticed that a lot of the canned goods had disappeared off of the shelves. There were some fresh produce, but no meats or dairy products. And no Cokes! I didn't have any at home, and was really craving something other than water to drink. I settled for some vanilla cream soda. Not the same, but at least it was something different.

What I really wanted was ice. We were at the point that past today we were going to need ice desperately. I think we can make it through the night, but tomorrow was going to get critical. When we got to the store, they had an ice machine, but it takes an hour to make, and as soon as they made ice, it was snatched up. It was no win situation. So, I thought I would try again tomorrow.

We have also been charging our cell phones in the car. Corinne found some of our old phones and charged them up before the storm. When our phones would start to die, we would swap out the SIM card and put it in the old phone and charge up our current phone. When it was charged, we would swap them back out again. It was a good plan for me, not so good for Corinne. She constantly got text messages, so she would just wait until it was charged before coming back in the house, which was about 1 1/2 hours, and continue texting from her current phone.

Oh, I have to tell you my God story. I found out that tonight I had to attend a short meeting regarding our Fall Product sales for Girl Scouts. I really didn't want to go because I felt like we were experiencing an emergency, and they wanted us to think about selling things? But I went anyway. After the meeting, I was talking to one of the leaders, and she asked me about power at my house. I told her that we still didn't have power, but we had water and gas. Then she asked me if I needed ice. I looked at her and said, "Yes". She asked me to follow her home and she would give me some ice. Apparently, she had been making ice in her ice trays, and was putting them in a large zip-loc bag. She was going to give the bags to a family in Conroe, but she said it was too far away, so she still had them and wanted to give it to someone who needed it. I benefitted with two large zip-locs full of ice cubes! I was so grateful!

I came home and immediately put the cubes in the cooler. It will be enough to cool our food another day. I splurged and took a few ice cubes and put them in a cup, and poured some of the vanilla cream soda in the cup. Boy, did it taste soooooo good to have something cold. I will never take ice for granted again.
