My daughter always teases me and says that whenever I go to a Girl Scout event, I always find someone from my past. Since I am the leader of my daughter's troop, I occasionally have to go to events and training. Last year, I was at an end of the year leader's appreciation dinner and I was sitting across from this lady that I had started to talk to. (I had never seen her before in my life!) In the course of the conversation, I found out her first name is Cindy. As we begin talking, I told her that we used to live in the neighborhood where our troop is, but because my husband and I divorced, I moved away with my daughter, but continued to bring my daughter to the same troop. She asked me where did I live, and I told her that we used to live on a particular street. She said, "We used to live on that street. We lived at XXXXX (same address where we used to live)." I looked at her and thought someone was pulling my leg. Did I hear her right? Suddenly it occurred to me. "Is your last name ----?" She looked at me like I was the crazy one now. It happened to be that her and her husband sold the house that we used to live at to my ex-husband and I.
This is the kind of thing that happened last Saturday. I had to take 4 classes for Girl Scouts to help me with my troop. I came in running late, went to the front of the room, checked in, put on a nametag, and headed back to my seat. As I was returning to my seat, a lady stopped me and asked me if I were Elizabeth. I said yes, and she asked me if I recognized her. I looked at her and racked my brains trying to figure out who she was. I looked at her nametag, but it didn't provide any clues. So, I finally admitted that I didn't remember, and she told me her maiden name. When she said that, it finally occurred to me who she was. She was someone that I knew from the youth group from my church when I was in middle school/high school. I hadn't seen her for about 20 years. Wow!
We caught each other up on old times and friends (in between classes and lunch), exchanged phone numbers, and promised to contact each other to get our troops together to go camping.
One side note: She was dating this guy in the youth group, and they ended up marrying each other. She said they are still married to each other. Wow! In this age of divorce, it is rare for someone my age to still be married to your high school sweetheart. I honor that, and hope that they will continue to stay together.
